About Melissa Galvez

A well-crafted message can make the difference between irrelevance and impact. As a communications strategist and writer, I help organizations bring their stories to life — reaching the right audience, through the right channels, to drive real results.

Some experiences that shaped me:

At Relay Graduate School of Education, BetterLesson, and Education Resource Strategies:

  • Wrote or edited 150+ op-eds, case studies, press releases, email campaigns, and video scripts as Director of Communications (and similar roles)

  • Drove an 800% increase in blog traffic over 3 years at Relay and 228% in one year at BetterLesson. I particularly enjoyed profiling teachers and school leaders, making deep research accessible and sticky, and coaching/ editing other writers.

  • Managed website, email, and PR — earning placements at Colorado NPR, WHYY-TV, Hechinger Report, The 74, and more.

  • Built systems to track KPIs, clean up data, and manage vendors as Director of Marketing Operations

As a journalist:

  • Reported 90+ stories for KUHF Houston Public Radio (NPR) — health, politics, science, community — and founded the Exploring Houston series and the NewsLab internship. Won 10+ awards, including an Edward R. Murrow Award

  • Reported on aging in America as part of the Carnegie-Knight News21 Fellowship at Columbia Journalism School

As a teacher:

  • Taught 8th grade writing with Teach for America in Houston. It was a hard, humbling, and formative experience — and part of my lifelong commitment to education.

A few projects I'm proud of:

  • Musegram: A company I founded during COVID's shutdown phase, so that customers could gift a virtual serenade from a professional singer to your loved ones, creating connections and supporting artists.

  • PresenTense Fellow: Studied social entrepreneurship and designed a concept for on-demand transportation for seniors (think Uber, but built for older adults)

Education:

  • Master's in Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School of Government— social policy focus, plus research on what makes internet activism go viral

  • BA in History, Princeton University — magna cum laude
